The photographs are of soils that have been described within Pennsylvania. The PDF file that you download contains a picture of the soil with its "Official Series Description". All soils that fall within the "Range of Characteristics" listed are called that soil series.

The extent of most of the soils used for mapping within Pennsylvania occur in other states as well. Each series is controlled by the state in which the "Type Location" is located.
